This has probably been one of our mildest winters ever, but that doesn't mean there isn't a good chill in the mornings. We finally installed gas logs in the playroom and have thoroughly enjoyed those, but the children have been coming up with their own creative ways to stay warm as well. Most notably, sitting under a blanket with the hair dryer on high, and laying on the floor in front of the heat vents! I was often tempted to join them!

Caleb in a Big Boy Bed
The beginning of the new year means new things for everyone, including Caleb. He moved to a big boy bed in the nursery first and was very quickly ready to join Jason in the "boy" room. Poor Colleen thought she was going to be booted out of her place in Jason's bed, but there seems to be just enough room for all. Wow, they are all growing up so fast and Caleb really seems like a little boy instead of our baby!
Aunt Becky
There are a few people in my life that I have always called "Uncle and Aunt" because they have a special place of significance beyond that of just friends. So, it seems fitting that my own children would now have a person such as that. Someone who loves them and prays regularly for them....Aunt Becky. We are so thankful to have her in our lives and were blessed to spend much of Christmas Day with her in our home this past Christmas. She was just one of the gang hanging out with Jason on the couch and watching cartoons.

An Early Christmas Gift!
Well, as if Christmas were not already a wonderful time of celebration and rejoicing, we were given an early gift this year to remind us how truly thankful we ought to be. A positive pregnancy test early one morning confirmed my own suspicions that we are indeed expecting again! Baby #4 should arrive sometime in late August, so there is no doubt much to Praise God for as the New Year approaches.
Christmas at Home 2011
With each passing year, the children's awareness of Christmas grows and this year was no exception. Caleb is still in the dark, but Jason and Colleen anticipated the day for quite sometime. They helped make a Happy Birthday Jesus cake and sang excitedly when we lit the candles. We also let them circle things in the Toys R Us magazine this year to get a feel for what might be on their wish list. Together, we decorated the tree and I couldn't help but feel great joy at passing along this tradition, being one of my own all-time favorites. Then, suddenly, the weekend was upon us and we drove to Blairesville along with Grandmama to visit with G.G. Kirkland on Christmas Eve, then it was Christmas Eve dinner at home with G.G. Mac. Finally, excited children were tucked in their beds and the little elves set to work with Grandmama close by! Their little faces the next morning were certainly worth the work and we could not have felt more blessed by our time together. Praise You, Father, for the gift of life and family we so dearly love and enjoy!

A Dream About Grandaddy
I pray often that the Lord would come to me in my dreams. Partly because I dream so often and would rather Him take over that time than other things, and partly because I read so much about the Lord communicating with people in their dreams or visions in Bible times. I do know that to be a promise that comes with the out-pouring of the Holy Spirit and don't want to miss anything there is to be had. That being said, I do not know if this dream I had was from the Lord or even if it served some spiritual purpose, all I know is how very real it felt toward the end and how I found myself not wanting to "wake up."
I dreamed that Samuel and I were at the hospital with Grandaddy as he was having open-heart surgery. There was no expectation that anything would go wrong, but suddenly he passed away during the operation. We brought little Colleen into the room to say goodbye almost as if it were her Daddy and I remember vaguely thinking that this was odd. Then, suddenly Grandaddy began to breath and his heart was pumping again. In shock, the doctors rushed him back into surgery and we went to the waiting room to tell my family what had just miraculously happened.
The scene completely shifted at this point and I was taking some old friends from High School to see a college apartment they might like to rent the following semester. As we walked and neared the apartment I realized that there was a large group of us and Samuel was at the front. We were all wearing matching T-shirts as if we were in a fraternity together, and I soon remembered that the apartment we were going to was having a birthday celebration for one of the residence. We filed in while loudly singing "Happy Birthday" with Samuel leading the whole thing. Most of us went to the back of the room as it was full of people, but I saw Samuel sitting on a bench near the front and next to him was Grandaddy.
Grandaddy looked young, maybe early to mid 40s, and he was so healthy and strong. He was always a big man but in my dream he was particularly strong, robust, and youthful. He wore blue jeans and a plaid short-sleeve collared shirt much like the ones I remember him wearing to church, and his hair was dark and combed over to the side neatly. The most notable thing about him was how he almost radiated with joy. I couldn't help but notice how fixated he was on Samuel, smiling and laughing loudly at every silly thing Samuel did to entertain the room. He was practically glowing with pleasure as he watched his son.
Still "in the dream" I found myself thinking, "There is Mr. Kirkland and, Wow!, he looks great after surgery." I went to him and kneeled down to hug him and the moment I did, there was a very clear awareness that this was not as it seemed. Grandaddy did not have heart surgery, he was dead, but here he was. He hugged me so tight as he always did and laughed merrily as I began to cry and take in the reality of his presence. The more I cried, the more he laughed. A moment later I heard Samuel say, "Look at Hannah, enjoying Daddy!" He laughed as did Grandaddy and I felt the dream begin to fade and woke up next to Samuel feeling a great loss and wanting to quickly go back to sleep. It was wonderful and sweet and personal. And I will never forget it as long as I live. Whether it was a dream, vision, or spiritual encounter, I do not know, but I cannot help but feel that for a moment I beheld Grandaddy as he is now, in the fullness of joy and pleasure that comes only from being in the presence of Christ.

Riley Christmas Part 2
Now for what a Riley Christmas really looks like without an hour to primp, coordinate clothes, and threaten everyone to smile! It is often chaotic but oh so much fun. This year, Papa Ron and Nonna gave us family gifts they had worked hard to find at garage sales all throughout the year and they also gave us matching family hoodies with a groupon for a local skating rink. Much to our surprise, the kids did so well and really enjoyed themselves. They were such troopers feeling their way around the rink and trying to get the hang of rolling, not walking. And of course there were the usual Ranger rides filled with screams of "jump the hump," and "middle diddle". Little arms flew wildly in the air and smiles were bigger each time they returned. There were also swing contests to see who would be the first ever to touch the tree and who was brave enough to let go with one hand and touch the platform upon the return. Movies, bingo, food, and a whole lot of love made it what it always is...days like heaven on earth!
